You give so that you can make a difference. If you can measure impact of your philanthropy, you can be confident that you’re giving wisely. Here are three ways Strategic Philanthropy, Ltd., assesses the philanthropic activities of our clients. The Charitable Giving Review This is a good first step to get more out of your giving. This assessment provides a qualitative and quantitative look at your current and historical giving. By examining the themes and trends of your philanthropic history, looking at factors such as geographic distribution, point of entry in the issue area, type of charitable recipient, how you know if you are having an impact, along with other relevant factors, we are able to put your giving into context. The Charitable Giving Review provides a snapshot of your giving. It pinpoints both successful efforts and missed opportunities, and helps to plan for the future. The Post-Grant Evaluation At various points in your grantmaking, it is important to assess the impact you have achieved on identified priority areas through your investments in funded organizations. This will help you determine if you are on course. The most effective approach is a participatory evaluation that involves the donor and the grantees, one which is not a "top down" approach. Periodic grantee evaluations provide real time feedback from grantees about your grantmaking practice and whether it is contributing to the change you envisioned. We encourage sharing the findings of the evaluation with funded organizations. As partners with the same goals in mind, the findings of the evaluation will help strengthen your relationships with the charities and institutions you support. It also provides the knowledge you need to help determine the optimal course of action going forward. Remember, evaluations are only as good as the action you take as a result. The Pursuit of Excellence Assessment for Family Foundations Strategic Philanthropy is one of a select group of professionals, trained by the National Center for Family Philanthropy to lead a family foundation through its Pursuit of Excellence Assessment process.
The Pursuit of Excellence Assessment is for established foundations that are a) in transition, b) experiencing lethargy, and/or c) interested in learning and improving their practice. The assessment process is an investment in understanding how your foundation can be most effective. For a quick reference guide to the PoE, please view our PoE fact sheet. It is the first such assessment tool designed to include family-specific aspects of managing a foundation by measuring and comparing a family’s individual model of philanthropy with the broader field.
